I have always wondered why the research manuscripts submitted to journals take so long to get translated into a publication. Many of our colleagues keep asking this question, for which there is no convincing explanation.

Daniel Hammerstein, in his blog, has divided the cause of these delays into Acceptance delays and Publishing delays, which leaves one pondering how one can try to circumvent such waits, and the answer, in my opinion, is just being patient. Every journal and publication house has its standard operating protocols once a paper gets uploaded, with some having a quick turnaround and others getting delayed.

An interesting paper by Powell categorically states this process of correction, reviewing, re-corrections, and re-reviewing however endless it seems, does improve the overall quality of the article but does not alter the conclusions and outcomes of that particular research.[1] We all know that the time taken to publish varies from journal to journal and has nothing to do with the impact factor of that journal.[2]

There are some basic rules each researcher needs to follow that increase the chances of the research getting published. A critical evaluation of available literature, being objective about your work, and having good language skills help bring out the best. The paper should be well written from start to finish, making it of high quality and a novelty.[3] A mundane, repetitive research topic with nothing novel most often results in a rejection which I feel the authors must be ready to accept.

The Journal of Conservative Dentistry is working hard to process the papers quickly without compromising on giving every research a fair chance to get published. The detailed technical corrections, vigorous reviewing, revisions, and manuscript handling aim to reach a decision, so the author knows if they need to try elsewhere.
